Never Give Up

In our Parasha, Yaakov Avinu sets out on a long journey, fleeing from his brother Esav. He leaves behind his home, his family, and everything that was once familiar and comforting. Alone in the wilderness, he stops to rest, his head resting on a stone, exhausted and vulnerable. And it’s in that moment, in the quiet of the night, that he dreams of a ladder reaching up to the heavens, with angels ascending and descending upon it.

However, that wasn’t just a dream, it’s a message to us all. Yaakov, in the depths of his loneliness, is shown that there is a bridge between the earth and the heavens, a connection between this world and the divine. Hashem is with him, even in the darkest and most uncertain moments. And this is something we all need to remember.

There are times when we feel like we’re on our own, when the burdens of life seem too heavy, when the road ahead seems impossible to navigate. But just like Yaakov, Hashem is with us, even when we can’t see it. He’s right there, guiding us, protecting us.

The ladder itself teaches us something profound about life. The angels go up and down, ascending first and then descending. Why? Because life is a journey of both ascent and descent. We all experience highs and lows, moments when everything seems perfect, and moments when it feels like everything is falling apart. But the key is to keep climbing, to keep striving. The angels rise first to reminder us that we are meant to ascend, to reach higher, to always push forward, even when it feels like we’re stuck on the lower rungs.

Whether you are a man working tirelessly to support your family, a woman balancing the many demands of life, or a young adult trying to navigate your way in the world, we all face challenges. Life isn’t easy. But Yaakov shows us the way. He faced betrayal, hardship, and loneliness, yet he never gave up on his mission, never let go of his faith. He kept pushing forward, kept climbing, and eventually, his journey led him to great heights.

Sometimes, it feels like we are stuck with our own stones, our challenges, our difficulties, the things that weigh us down. But Yaakov shows us that even a stone can be a place of rest, a place where we can connect with Hashem. He used the stone as a pillow and a foundation for his dream. We too can take our struggles and use them as stepping stones, as opportunities for growth. Every challenge we face can bring us closer to Hashem if we choose to see it that way.

And there’s something else to remember. After Yaakov woke from his dream, he said, “Surely Hashem is in this place, and I did not know it...”

Often, we go through life feeling distant, disconnected, as though Hashem is far from us. But He is right here, in every moment, in every challenge, in every joy. We just need to open our eyes and recognize His presence, to wake up from our slumber and see that He is always with us.

So wherever you are, whatever you are facing, don’t give up. Keep climbing. Even when you feel like you’re at your lowest, there’s always a way up. And Hashem is right there, supporting you, encouraging you, believing in you. Your journey, your struggles, your efforts, they are all meaningful. And you have the strength to overcome them.

May we all find the strength to keep climbing, to keep pushing forward, and to see Hashem’s presence in every step of our journey.
