Pinchas

The Courage to Stand for Truth

"Pinchas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aharon HaKohen, turned back My anger from Bnei Yisrael when he zealously avenged My vengeance among them, so that I did not destroy Bnei Yisrael in My vengeance." (Bamidbar 25:11)

Parshat Pinchas begins with Hashem rewarding Pinchas for an act that could have easily been misunderstood. In a moment of moral collapse—when Bnei Yisrael were openly sinning with the daughters of Moav and Midian—Pinchas stood up and took action. He stopped the corruption and brought back the honor of Hashem.

And instead of punishing him for acting without hesitation, Hashem gives him the ultimate reward: "Briti Shalom"—"My covenant of peace."

This seems strange. Peace is usually associated with patience, kindness, and dialogue. Yet Pinchas, who acted with zeal, is given the reward of peace. What does this teach us?

Because true peace is not about avoiding conflict. It is not about ignoring the truth for the sake of comfort. Real peace is built on righteousness.

Pinchas saw that Bnei Yisrael were in danger—not from an external enemy, but from within. And he understood that sometimes, standing up for what is right requires taking uncomfortable action.

This is not a call for extremism. Chazal teach that Pinchas acted leshem Shamayim, with no personal ego, no anger, only a pure desire for Hashem’s honor. That is why his act was accepted. Had he acted for himself, it would have been no different than violence.

But Hashem saw his heart. And because of that, Pinchas was not just a man of action—he became a man of peace.

And this is our challenge.

There are moments in life when we see something wrong, something that needs to change. But fear holds us back—What will people say? What if I stand alone?

Pinchas teaches us that when we stand for what is right, when we act with purity and for the sake of Hashem, that is when true peace is created.

The question is: Do we have the courage to act when it matters most?

Because when we do, we are not just making a difference—we are bringing Hashem’s Brit Shalom into the world.
