Question: If an elderly person enters the synagogue, am I required to stand for him even if I am far away?
Answer: There is a Torah obligation to stand in honor of an elderly person, meaning someone who is 70 years or older. Some are stringent and stand from age 60. However, this obligation applies only if the elderly person passes within four amot (approximately six feet) of you. In such a case, you must stand up fully and remain standing until he has passed. If he is farther away than four amot, you are not required to stand.
