Question: I’m growing cucumbers and tomatoes in my garden and wanted to know how far apart they need to be planted to avoid the prohibition of kilayim?
Answer: The laws of kilayim have many details, but generally, when planting different types of seeds in a garden, you must separate each type by at least one and a half tefachim (14 cm or 5.5 inches). Additionally, you must ensure that the leaves of the different plants do not come together or appear as if they are growing together. For plants that naturally spread, like squash and similar species, a greater distance is required to prevent their leaves from mixing. (Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 297:40)
