Question: Shalom Rabbi, we wanted to know your opinion regarding electronic cigarettes, do they require a hechsher (kosher certification)?
Answer: Electronic cigarettes do not require a hechsher, as in most cases, there is no concern of animal-based ingredients. Even in cases where such concerns exist, the processing renders any non-kosher elements unfit for canine consumption (nifsal me’achilat kelev) and their taste is degraded, which nullifies the prohibition. This is similar to what the Rema ruled (Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 27:10).
Likewise, regarding gelatin, Rav Ovadia Yosef ruled (Yabia Omer Vol. 8, Yoreh De’ah, Siman 11) explains that since its production process makes it unfit for consumption, it is permissible, even more so in the case of smoking rather than eating.
